Intel makes major investment into smart glasses provider

In an effort to bring their own take on Google Glass to the market, chipmaker Intel has invested heavily in smart glasses provider Vuzix to the tune of $24.8 million.
Intel has been making inroads into wearable technology lately, with the company partnering with Google to replace Texas Instruments as the provider for the controller hardware for Google’s eponymous device. The new deal is likely to be part and parcel with Intel’s efforts to provide the highest and most sophisticated designs for Google, though the chip manufacturer has yet to comment on the newly-forged deal.
Meanwhile, Vuzix, a company founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Rochester, New York, manufactures computerized glasses and is a leading software developer for computer display devices. Vuzix’s expertise is likely to aid Intel in a crucial manner as the chipmaker delves deeper into wearable technology and the so-called Internet of Things, a term used to describe a future where most of the everyday devices we use are connected to the Internet and can be interacted with from anywhere a user has a wireless connection.
