There will be half a billion wearable devices in use around the world within four years, including smart watches and fitness trackers - up from just 109m last year.
Within the UK there to be 16.4m wearables by 2019, up from 2.8m last year, according to forecasts made today by Cisco.
The company predicts that each of these devices will be creating 569MB of data per month by 2019, up from 119MB last year.
Some of these devices, around 1.1m, will have embedded mobile connections, but most will channel their data through smartphones, Cisco predicts.
This is expected to fuel an 18-fold growth in mobile traffic from wearable devices between 2014 and 2019.
