To preserve data (i don t know if there are some perfect advices), but there are surely some good advices:
1.Replace (if you have the patience - and you search for the tutorial) some links to internal folders with the ones to external folders (external hard disks) to reinstall easier your Windows (i don t know if it s possible without Linux behind it **) or your Linux (i have Ubuntu = yes, i am a newbie)
2.Personally, i use an easier sollution - i put links to folders in the external hard, in my panels on the desktop - but in the case of an instant crash, my current work is gone, because i save on my documents (for an instance), then i move the files on external drives, and if the crash it s before the moving :)
...
It s very easy (you select the folder - drag and drop), just as seen in the panel below, next to "Applications" (yeap, i use Ubuntu Mate 15.10)
* yes i was thinking about a girl
**According to the link inserted above - it seems to be possible on Windows 7 - although i never tried it.
