UPDATE 1-AT&T top buyer at U.S. airwaves auction; Verizon, Dish spend big

Jan 30 (Reuters) - AT&T Inc spent close to half the total in the record-setting U.S. sale of airwaves for mobile data, with Verizon Communications Inc and bidding partners of Dish Network Corp also spending heavily, results showed on Friday.

AT&T bid a total of $18.2 billion to win licenses of so-called AWS-3 spectrum; Verizon bid $10.4 billion and T-Mobile US Inc bid $1.8 billion, according to the results released by the Federal Communications Commission.

The record $44.9 billion auction, which ended on Thursday, demonstrated the voracious appetite of wireless carriers and other companies for spectrum, which has become a prized commodity as companies race to satisfy the growing consumer demand to stream video and other data-guzzling content.

Dish itself did not win any licenses, but it had entered into joint bidding agreements with SNR Wireless LicenseCo LLC and Northstar Wireless LLC, in which it has indirect ownership interest. Those two companies bid a total of $13.3 billion, but had applied to receive a discount as small business entities, bringing their net bid amount to $10 billion.

AT&T (NYSE:T) Plans For 2015

The US wireless industry is ruled by AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon. Both enjoy healthy market share and the top spot off and on. Whereas the third place is either for Sprint or T-Mobile. Lately AT&T (NYSE:T) is focusing its energies on removing Verizon from being the number one wireless provider. AT&T (NYSE:T) is a multinational telecommunication corporation itself and the firm is rated second for being the provider of mobile telephones and the largest for fixed telephones.

Last week AT&T (NYSE:T) purchased a Mexican wireless provider known as lusacell for a hefty $2.5 billion. This move has given AT&T (NYSE:T) 9.2 million Mexican subscribers on a platter, giving the firm access to 70% of the wireless network. The permission to enter into the market was given by the New Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto. For AT&T (NYSE:T) this was the first move in a broader expansion plan.

AT&T joins the data rollover party, but there are restrictions

AT&T is following T-Mobile's footsteps in the roll-over data space. AT&T wireless customers will be able to roll over their unused data for use within the next month.
"Beginning January 25, all new and current AT&T Mobile Share Value customers will automatically receive the Rollover Data feature at no additional cost," AT&T wrote on its website.
Unlike T-Mobile's Data Stash data rollover program — which debuted last month — AT&T's Rollover Data program will only let data be used the following month. T-Mobile's plan allows users to rollover data for year.
AT&T's rollover options also only apply to AT&T Mobile Share Value customers. Pre-paid customers or those with grandfathered older data plans are not eligible for the promotion.
