What Should Data Scientists Know?

Are there really 28,504 data scientist positions posted on the recruiting site Dice.com? That’s the number that comes up when you search for “data scientist,” but that incorporates listings that include both words, together or not. According to Dice, the number at any given time is actually more like 150.
Even so, it’s a desirable job. After all, no less than the Harvard Business Review, back in 2012, dubbed the position of data scientist as the sexiest job of the 21st century. As Wired noted the following year, “Nate Silver’s eerily accurate election predictions and Paul DePodesta’s baseball-revolutionizingMoneyball techniques” made celebrities of math nerds. Just a week or so ago, Mashable called it2015’s hottest profession.
In a stunning collision of increased demand and diminished supply, though, a couple of weeks ago CNBC’s Nyshka Chandran cited data from both McKinsey and IDC showing there will be horrific shortfalls in the number of data scientist candidates available. Forbes columnist Louis Columbus, looking at where big data jobs will be in 2015, used data from Wanted Analytics and reached similar conclusions.

SAMSUNG NX1 REVIEW

If you’re looking for Samsung’s digital imaging flagship, the search simply ends with the NX1 ($1,500 MSRP, body only). This is the company’s top mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) – by far – and is loaded to the gills with just about everything Samsung could put into a camera other than a complete Galaxy smartphone. This camera is terrific and very impressive – something to look at if you want to shoot 4K content – and demonstrates how far Samsung has come in camera manufacturing.

One of the top-line features of the new NX1 is a 28.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. The backside-illuminated (BSI) chip is the most pixel-packed of any in this category. The next step up is a camera with a full-frame sensor like the still available Sony A7, which is a bit cheaper at $1,299 (body only) but is a year older. But one area the NX1 beats the A7 is in video quality. Here, you can capture Cinema 4K and 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) to the memory card, as well as Full HD 1080/60p footage. To get 4K with Sony, you need the $2,499 A7S or Panasonic’s DMC-GH4 ($1,499), among other 4K-capable cameras. In other words, the NX1 is priced right – at least on paper.

H.W. : Dell XPS 13 review (2015): Meet the world's smallest 13-inch laptop

CES has come and gone; the holidays are long past; and now all we're left with are a few months of dreary weather. No fun, right? Right. Except if you're a tech writer. Now that most major companies have revealed their new lineups, we have the exciting job of testing all this stuff; seeing how it holds up in real life. The first product of the year to cross my desk: none other than the Dell XPS 13, a compact 13-inch laptop that ranked as a finalist for our annual Best of CES awards.
In addition to being the first system we've tested with Intel's new fifth-generation Core processor, the redesigned XPS is notable for its nearly bezel-less display -- a design feat that allows it to have the footprint of an 11-inch machine. Particularly with a starting price of $800 (pretty reasonable for a flagship laptop), it seemed poised to become one of our new favorite Ultrabooks. And you know what? It actually is.

Dell updates Linux-powered Developer Edition portables with M3800 monster

We had a lot of good things to say about Dell’s XPS-13 Developer Edition when we reviewed it in April 2013—in fact, the best thing about it was how normal it was. Dell took the time to do Linux on an Ultrabook correctly, and the resulting platform was a slim Linux-powered portable that just worked,Cupertino-style.



This morning, Dell has announced that their Developer Edition line of Linux-powered laptops is getting a pretty significant revamp. In addition to an upgraded XPS-13 Developer Edition based on Dell’s 2015 XPS-13 refresh, the line is adding a piece of workstation-class hardware: the Dell Precision M3800 mobile workstation, Developer Edition.

The branding is a bit of a mouthful, but the hardware to back it up is substantial. Built around Dell’s M3800 workstation-class laptop, the Developer Edition ships with what Dell Web Vertical Director Barton George calls "the vanilla image of the most recent LTS release (14.04)." The workstation’s default configuration includes a 15.6" 1920x1080 display, 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive, but it can be customized with up to 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, a 1TB mSATA SSD, and a 15.6 UltraSharp IGZO UHD Touch display with 3840x2160 pixels.

Galaxy Note 4 review: Samsung finally listens to its fans, and it pays off

The Galaxy Note 4 is quite possibly one of the best smartphones Samsung has ever concocted.






It’s outfitted in a seriously stylish metal outfitting and faux-leather backing, features a Quad HD display for a high-resolution viewing experience, and comes bundled with the ever-so-useful S-Pen stylus. It’s also a bonafide replacement to carrying around a small-sized phone and mid-sized tablet with you when all you want is a better screen for reading and watching movies.






But the best thing about the Galaxy Note 4 is that it feels like Samsung took every little comment stuffed into its cobweb-covered suggestion box and actually listened to what its users want.

YotaPhone 2 Review: Two Screens Are Indeed Better Than One

  

    

Yota Devices is a Russian company that entered the mental space of tech enthusiasts everywhere with the debut of the original YotaPhone a couple of years ago. In 2014, it launched the YotaPhone 2, a second-generation smartphone that greatly improved on the original concept. The YotaPhone 2 is a surprisingly capable, well-equipped Android smartphone – which happens to also have the clever addition of a second, fully touch-sensitive e-ink display, all wrapped up in a very smartly-designed package.

Dell Venue 8 7000 Review: A Terrible Name For an Incredible Tablet

Late last year, Dell announced the most interesting Android tablet in years. It has great guts in a thin body with striking design, topped off with one horrible name. But it's so much more than just a pretty face and a hot body.

What Is It?

The world's thinnest tablet, running Android 4.4 KitKat on a fantastic 8.4-inch, 2560 x 1600 OLED screen with an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM underneath. Only thinner than the second-gen iPad Air by a mere 0.1 mm, mind you, but still damned thin. A tablet with a camera that can tell you how tall things are. Horribly, horribly named; it's known as both the Venue 8 7000 Series and the Venue 8 7840, and I'll be using that second one from here on out. The most interesting Android tablet I've seen in ages.
