02.Think the Galaxy S6’s hardware rips off the iPhone? Take a look at its software

galaxy s6 iphone copy

From a hardware perspective, there’s been a lot of talk regarding how the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S6 borrows a lot of design inspiration from the iPhone 6. Indeed, it’s hard to look at the two devices side by side and not see a number of striking similarities between the two.
And, truth be told, that’s quite all right. Apple, after all, shouldn’t be the only company on the planet allowed to make thinner smartphones with advanced and sturdier materials. Further, it’s not as if Apple itself is shy about lifting design cues from smartphones that it itself deems to be inspiring. But where Samsung runs into foul territory with the S6 is software.
While there’s only so much one can do with the hardware design of a smartphone, software affords designers endless avenues for creativity and originality. Unfortunately, some of the software cues we’ve seen on the S6 seem to indicate that the copying spirit at Samsung is alive and well.
Below are two quick examples.

First off, we have the setup screen for Samsung’s fingerprint reader. While there’s nothing wrong with Samsung incorporating a fingerprint reader onto the S6, the design Samsung opted for during the setup process is a blatant ripoff of the iPhone.
In order to get the iPhone to recognize a new fingerprint, users must tap on the iPhone home button repeatedly. With each successive tap, an animated photo of a fingerprint grows in size as to indicate that the iPhone is successfully gathering more information about the print.
Upon completion, it looks something like this.

01.Google Announces Mobile Payments Platform Android Pay

At the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona,Google's GOOGL +0.66% senior vice president of Android, Chrome and Google Apps Sundar Pichai announced an upcoming mobile payments framework called Android Pay. Android Pay will not be a separate payment app, but it is going to be a platform that enables developers to integrate mobile payments into their apps using an API layer.
“We are doing it in a way so that anybody else can build a payments service on top of Android,” said Pichai during the event via The Guardian. “In places like China and Africa, we hope that people will use Android Pay to build innovative services.” Android Pay will be able to act as a payment source within apps and stores that have NFC-capable registers.

Down the road, Google will enable Android Pay to utilize biometric devices such as fingerprint scanners — just like Apple AAPL +0.22% Pay. Apple Pay can be secured using the Touch ID fingerprint sensors in some of the latest iOS devices to approve transactions. The credit card data of Android Pay users will be stored locally so that payments can be made without a data connection. To prevent fraud, Android Pay will use “tokenized” card numbers — which means that a one-time credit card number will be generated for each transaction.

This past weekend, Samsung announced a biometric-enabled mobile payments system of its own called Samsung Pay. Pichai said that Android Pay is not intended to rival against Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay utilizes a fingerprint scanner to secure payments, which will be built into the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge so it essentially competes directly against Apple Pay. Google will work closely with Samsung to determine if there are potential synergies between Android Pay and Samsung Pay.

How LoopPay Helps Samsung (SSNLF) Catch Up With Apple’s (AAPL) Apple Pay

Samsung recently acquired LoopPay, a startup that allows user to make payments with their phones

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has had its own payment system, Google Wallet in the market for a few years now, and is soon launching a new payment system called Plaso. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced its payment systems, Apple Pay, to the world last year. SAMSUNG ELECT LTD (F) (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) has long been on the lookout to find something that could help it catch up with its rivals; recently, it acquired LoopPay, a mobile payments startup.

LoopPay is a venture that kicked off with a basic iPhone accessory that would help users pre-load their credit/debit cards onto the system by sweeping the card with a puck-sized device that goes into a headphone jack. After that, the user is given a phone case that is installed with a magnetic induction loop, which communicates with the terminal and registers the swiped card with it.

This case with the little puck then duplicates the effect of a card sweeping through a terminal and sends out a code to match what the credit card reader would have received to process the transaction. LoopPay states that these devices use Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST), which is safe and secure. Last winter, LoopPay also launched the Fob mobile payment solution that also can be used instead of the case to process transactions.

According to CNET, the service works at almost every place that has a card reader installed, although it takes a bit more time compared to ApplePay. While ApplePay uses Touch ID to authenticate user identity and instantly processes transactions, LoopPay requires that a user press a button on the back of the case or it can be activated when the case is paired via Bluetooth.

DID SAMSUNG JUST ACE APPLE PAY?

The competition between Apple and Samsung has just gotten fiercer — this time it’s for the mobile payments grand prize.
Samsung announced yesterday (Feb. 18) that it had acquired LoopPay, a mobile commerce platform that uses its Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) patented technology to turn existing mag stripe readers into mobile contactless receivers and enables LoopPay digital wallet users to use their LoopPay wallets at more than 90 percent of merchant establishments today. The LoopPay technology was the subject of a PYMNTS.com “Breakthrough Series” serial in 2014.
As part of the deal, LoopPay founders Will Graylin and George Wallner will be working in collaboration with Samsung’s mobile division on customer loyalty and customer service matters as it relates to mobile payments.

“This acquisition accelerates our vision to drive and lead innovation in the world of mobile commerce. Our goal has always been to build the smartest, most secure, user-friendly mobile wallet experience, and we are delighted to welcome LoopPay to take us closer to this goal,” JK Shin, president and head of IT and mobile division at Samsung, said in a company news release.

LoopPay’s wallet also enables any card with a mag stripe on it, including gift and private label cards as well as loyalty and membership cards. LoopPay’s technology mimics the swipe of a physical mag stripe card, so merchants also pay card present rates for LoopPay transactions.

In December, when news of the potential collaboration was leaked, Graylin said that the mobile payment technology would be implemented in a smartphone sometime in 2015 that would have “massive penetration.” He declined to name the handset manufacturer. We now know that handset manufacturer is Samsung.

Obama administration ENDORSES Apple Pay during Tim Cook's White House love-in

U.S. benefit claimants can now use Cupertino payment system

President Barack Obama has backed Apple Pay – Cupertino's new payment system – after iThing chiefTim Cook was given a 15-minute-long ad spot at the White House on Friday.
That endorsement means that the government will accept Apple Pay transactions for citzens who have federal-payment cards and are, for example, claiming social security benefits.
The White House said in a brief note on itscybersecurity and consumer protection fact sheet:
Apple, Visa, MasterCard, Comerica Bank and U.S. Bank are committed to working together to make Apple Pay, a tokenized, encrypted service, available for users of federal payment cards, including DirectExpress and GSA SmartPay cards.
It comes after the Obama administration signed an executive order in October last year, promising to beef up consumer financial protection with the launch of the Buy Secure Initiative.
Apple revealed details of its NFC-stuffed payment system in September 2014. At the time, Cook promised his company's bonk-to-pay service would simplify the way people paid for goods.
But it had a rocky launch: some Apple Pay users reported that they were getting charged twice for the same purchases. And – within a week of those gripes – two of the biggest Stateside drugstore chains,CVS and Rite Aid, had yanked support for Apple Pay.

It's been claimed that Apple pockets 15 cents of every $100 purchase made via its payment system. ®

Apple Pay won't add to Apple's profit

How Apple Pay works
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Apple is expected to announce that it had a quarter for the history books during the last three months of 2014. But Apple Pay will most likely be little more than a footnote.
The payments system is taking off -- but it's not that widely used yet.

"Apple Pay is not likely to be a material revenue stream on its own anytime soon," said Colin Gillis, analyst at BGC Partners.
Apple (AAPL, Tech30) gets just 15 cents for every $100 in Apple Pay transactions, according to Gillis.
So for Apple Pay to move the needle just 1% on Apple's expected sales in the last three months, users would have had to use it for transactions worth $451 billion (which is highly unlikely).
