Tech More: Apple iPhone The next iPhone could come with the biggest camera change we've seen in years

Apple may make a significant change to the camera sensor on its next iPhone, bumping up the megapixel count from eight to 12, according to IHS China analyst Kevin Wong, who shared his thoughts on Apple's next iPhone via Chinese social network Sina Weibo.
If true, this would be the biggest change to the iPhone's camera we've seen on the iPhone in years.
Apple has left the iPhone's camera sensor at eight megapixels ever since the iPhone 4s was released in 2011. But, while Apple hasn't increased the number of megapixels, it has made other improvements to the iPhone's camera over the past few years — including making each individual megapixel larger.
To understand what this means, you need to know a little bit about how cameras work. A megapixel is essentially what filters light through a camera when capturing a photograph. And, the more light a camera captures, the better the image.

So it sounds like more megapixels equals better photos, right? Actually, not so much.

While more megapixels can lead to better image quality, it's not necessarily the deciding factor. The size of the megapixels, rather than the sheer number of megapixels, is actually just as important, if not more so.

Experts have previously likened the way a megapixel captures light to buckets capturing water, as CNET explains. Imagine each megapixel is a bucket, and the light coming in is water. If you want to capture as much water as possible, it would be more efficient to use as many big buckets as possible rather than a bunch of small ones.

10 killer tips to get your Apple Watch set up just right

Navigating the Apple Watch can be a little confusing at first, and it definitely takes a while to get your notifications dialed in so it’s not bugging you too often, but you’re still finding out what you need to know. These tips can help you adjust what the watch shows you and how, so you’ll spend less time fiddling with settings and more time enjoying your new arm candy.

Take control of notifications

If you’re one of those people who allows push notifications for every app on your iPhone, the Apple Watch will drive you insane. This is a gadget that requires very specific tailoring to ensure you’re only getting the most important alerts. Otherwise your wrist will be barraged with taps. Get to know the Apple Watch app on your iPhone: It will make your watch the personalized device you want.

watch iphone notifications
Every app on your iPhone can send notifications to your watch. Trust us, you don't want that.
In My Watch > Notifications, you can pick and choose which apps you want to receive notifications from. Even non-watch apps that just live on your iPhone will send you watch notifications if you let them, and you shouldn’t. Pick which apps make sense to see on the watch and mirror those—turn the rest off.
The watch’s native apps like Messages and Weather let you further customize the alerts you receive, so they don’t have to exactly mirror your iPhone notification settings.
Something to note: If you want to make sure you receive notifications on the watch from specific apps, you need to change all of those apps’ notification settings on your iPhone. This can be insanely time-consuming, but worth it. Otherwise, the watch will drive you nuts.

08.Does Apple-HBO Deal Diss Roku, Google, Others?

UPDATED March 10 10:30 AM EST with comment from Sharp.
It's finally here. The online, a la carte HBO service everyone's been waiting for — and those with Apple TV, iPhones or iPads are the only ones who can get the $15/month HBO Now.
What if you have a Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast or Nexus Player, a game console or a smart TV? Unknown. HBO hasn't announced support for any other devices, nor have any device manufacturers. Tom's Guide inquired with HBO and many of the big streaming-device makers, and none have committed to further plans for the services.

A Roku representative, speaking on behalf of the company but asking to not be named, provided only a philosophical statement. "In general, broad distribution is important for content providers, and especially for a new service where the goal is to gain as many subscribers as possible," the person told Tom's Guide.

Google gave a subtle hint about its future with HBO. "We don't have any specifics to announce around HBO Now," said spokeswoman Veronica Navarrete, "but it is worth keeping in mind that the HBO Go app already works with Chromecast and HBO subscribers can still get content that way." That seems to say: Google is ready when HBO is.

Leaving Roku out — at least of the initial launch — is curious since the streaming box, stick and TV maker is one of the top device makers. Leaving out Android apps is also odd, since the OS runs not only on major mobile devices but also because a version of it, Android TV, runs on Google's Nexus Player and on upcoming smart TVs from Sony and Sharp, among others. Android (as well as iOS) devices can also cast content to the popular, $39 Google Chromecast.

09.Home/ Reviews/ Laptops & Notebooks/ New Apple MacBook vs. MacBook Air: Ultra-Thin Laptop Showdown

2015 Apple MacBooks

Apple has finally unveiled its newest, thinnest laptop, but it's not a MacBook Air.
Bringing to bear the lessons learned after making the iPad and iPhone for years, the newest laptop is simply the MacBook, and that same spare aesthetic is seen throughout the new design. It's slimmed down, polished, and refined about as much as a laptop can be, and the result is thinner and lighter than the 11-inch MacBook Air. The new MacBook doesn't hit stores until April 10, so the big question for shoppers is clear—Do I get the current MacBook Air or wait for the new MacBook?

The Apple MacBook 12-inch (2015) uses the same sort of unibody aluminum design seen on the Apple MacBook Air 11-Inch (2014)$999.00 at Amazon, but it's slimmer and lighter. The entire laptop measures just 0.51 inches at the thickest point, a fraction of an inch slimmer than the 0.68-inch thick MacBook Air. It's also lighter, weighing 2 pounds, shedding nearly 5 ounces from the MacBook Air's 2.31 pounds. It also has a fanless design, thanks to an Intel Core M processor (more on that below). That's a subtle change from the 11-inch Air, which hides its fan vents in the hinge, but it makes for a slightly thinner chassis and fewer concerns about airflow. When it comes to weight and size, the new MacBook has the edge.

08.iPad Pro Release Date, Specs, Features & Price: Way Thicker Than iPad Air 2? [Rumors]

Apple Unveils New iPad Models

The rumored mega-tablet could disappoint prospects aiming for a thinner device.
Days before Apple's "Spring Forward" event, speculations over the iPad Pro have bombarded the internet. Fresh from the highlights of this year's Mobile World Congress, the industry has now set eyes on the Apple Watch -- but the rest of Apple's products are certainly not forgotten.

For the uninitiated, note that the iPad Pro (aka iPad Air Plus) has not been confirmed by the Cupertino giant. As told by Computerworld, analysts are now convinced that the tablet arrives late 2015 or early 2016. As you may have guessed, this is another push in the rumor wheelbarrow, which previously pegged a March arrival (Spring Forward, yes).

Another side of the story believes a third quarter launch, which technically puts June as the earliest time. This appears to be one possibility, considering that Apple's next Worldwide Developers Conference is expected to run on June 8 to 12.
While these are best taken with a spoon of salt, rumors about the iPad Pro's thickness have been fairly consistent since last year. In fact, the measurement may have been out all these time.
The Daily Mail cited an earlier leak, which suggested that the iPad Pro is thicker by 0.9 mm than the iPad Air 2. Users would know that the latter possessed a depth of 6.1 mm (probably the world's second-thinnest tablet), which gives the iPad Pro a thickness of 7.0 mm.

09.Apple Watch face off: which smartwatch should you buy?

Ahead of the Apple Watch launch on 9 March, Sophie Curtis compares the best of the other smartwatches on the market

The Apple Watch is due to launch next week, promising to propel smartwatches into the mainstream. But Apple's Watch will be joining an already crowded market, with many smartwatch makers currently on their second or third edition.
Some of these devices excel in battery life, others in usability; some work independently from smartphones while others need to be contantly connected; some are beautiful items intended as objects of desire, while others focus on functionality and affordability.
If you're trying to work out which smartwatch to buy, you first need to work out what you want from it. Here The Telegraph rates the current batch of devices, based on a range of different criteria:
Best for battery: Pebble Time Steel
Compatible with: iPhone and Android
Price: $250 (£163) on Kickstarter or $299 (£195) thereafter

The Pebble Time Steel is the first 'premium' device from smartwatch maker Pebble Technology. Announced at Mobile World Congress, the device is made from stainless steel with a colour e-paper display and a scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass lens. It has a built-in microphone for quick voice replies and notes, and is water resistant. It also runs Pebble's new timeline interface, which organises information chronologically. Most importantly, however, it boasts a battery life of up to 10 days, blowing most other smartwatches out of the water.
Best for design: LG Watch Urbane
Compatible with: Any Android smartphone
Price: Unknown

02.Think the Galaxy S6’s hardware rips off the iPhone? Take a look at its software

galaxy s6 iphone copy

From a hardware perspective, there’s been a lot of talk regarding how the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S6 borrows a lot of design inspiration from the iPhone 6. Indeed, it’s hard to look at the two devices side by side and not see a number of striking similarities between the two.
And, truth be told, that’s quite all right. Apple, after all, shouldn’t be the only company on the planet allowed to make thinner smartphones with advanced and sturdier materials. Further, it’s not as if Apple itself is shy about lifting design cues from smartphones that it itself deems to be inspiring. But where Samsung runs into foul territory with the S6 is software.
While there’s only so much one can do with the hardware design of a smartphone, software affords designers endless avenues for creativity and originality. Unfortunately, some of the software cues we’ve seen on the S6 seem to indicate that the copying spirit at Samsung is alive and well.
Below are two quick examples.

First off, we have the setup screen for Samsung’s fingerprint reader. While there’s nothing wrong with Samsung incorporating a fingerprint reader onto the S6, the design Samsung opted for during the setup process is a blatant ripoff of the iPhone.
In order to get the iPhone to recognize a new fingerprint, users must tap on the iPhone home button repeatedly. With each successive tap, an animated photo of a fingerprint grows in size as to indicate that the iPhone is successfully gathering more information about the print.
Upon completion, it looks something like this.

09.Why Samsung decided to launch two Galaxy S6 phones? Move betrays the company’s lack of confidence

We’ve seen Apple release two variants of its iPhone 6, and now Samsung follows suit with the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. While Apple had to up its ante and give into user feedback by churning out a larger display model to cater to a specific demand from fans, Samsung does not seem to have any particular reason for why it opted for two models.
Wouldn’t the innovative and unique S6 Edge design been more than enough for a Samsung flagship? The device has already addressed the major criticism against Samsung, which is its design. The Galaxy S6 Edge has a great design, which is bot refreshing and different. The other Galaxy S6 variant seems just futile, especially considering that there isn’t much difference in the specs except the Edge has a slightly larger battery. Both Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge sport a similar display size, camera and most other features are also exactly the same. With the design change being the only prime difference between the two models, Samsung has made it difficult for users to get their hands on the better variant by pricing it about Rs 10,000 higher than the Galaxy S6.

The move speaks of an utter lack of confidence on the part of Samsung. It says Samsung wasn’t confident enough to launch the Galaxy S6 Edge as its solo flagship model and was therefore hedging its bets.

Lately, Samsung has started losing its grip over the markets that it once dominated. From falling shares to a decline in sales and a bunch of dud flagships, the future of the company doesn’t look bright, and may well be on the same path of ruin as Nokia.

10.Samsung takes a time-out on smartwatches as Apple Watch launch nears

Summary:Samsung is taking a breather from its frantic smartwatch release schedule, preferring for the moment to play a watching-and-waiting game.

Samsung was one of the biggest producers of smartwatches in the years leading up to the launch of the Apple Watch but now the company is taking a pause to rethink its strategy.
The Korean company hasn't been shy of trying out new designs to appeal to various consumer tastes in the emerging smartwatch category, having released everything from simple fitness bands like the Gear Fit to the Tizen-powered 3G Gear S, with core specs not far off some low-end smartphones.

Indeed, Samsung has launched six smart watches in just 14 months, as analyst firm Canalys noted recently. This propelled it to the top spot among 'smart band' makers, who shipped 4.6 million units in total last year.
But unlike last year's Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, which were launched alongside the Galaxy S5, this year's release of the Galaxy 6S at the MWC trade show came with no companion smartwatch.
According to the Wall Street Journal, that's because Samsung is taking a "pause" as it ponders what it means to create the perfect smartwatch.

01.Google Announces Mobile Payments Platform Android Pay

At the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona,Google's GOOGL +0.66% senior vice president of Android, Chrome and Google Apps Sundar Pichai announced an upcoming mobile payments framework called Android Pay. Android Pay will not be a separate payment app, but it is going to be a platform that enables developers to integrate mobile payments into their apps using an API layer.
“We are doing it in a way so that anybody else can build a payments service on top of Android,” said Pichai during the event via The Guardian. “In places like China and Africa, we hope that people will use Android Pay to build innovative services.” Android Pay will be able to act as a payment source within apps and stores that have NFC-capable registers.

Down the road, Google will enable Android Pay to utilize biometric devices such as fingerprint scanners — just like Apple AAPL +0.22% Pay. Apple Pay can be secured using the Touch ID fingerprint sensors in some of the latest iOS devices to approve transactions. The credit card data of Android Pay users will be stored locally so that payments can be made without a data connection. To prevent fraud, Android Pay will use “tokenized” card numbers — which means that a one-time credit card number will be generated for each transaction.

This past weekend, Samsung announced a biometric-enabled mobile payments system of its own called Samsung Pay. Pichai said that Android Pay is not intended to rival against Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay utilizes a fingerprint scanner to secure payments, which will be built into the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge so it essentially competes directly against Apple Pay. Google will work closely with Samsung to determine if there are potential synergies between Android Pay and Samsung Pay.

06.Apple, Linux, not Windows, most vulnerable operating systems in 2014

OS X, iOS, and Linux were the top three most vulnerable operating systems in 2014, but Internet Explorer was the most vulnerable app.

A whopping average of 19 security vulnerabilities were reported every day in 2014. The number of vulnerabilities discovered each year in operating systems, applications, and hardware has skyrocketed in a nasty trend, according to analysis by GFI Software.

Operating systems with most security vulnerabilities in 2014

The top spot for vulnerabilities in operating systems no longer goes to Microsoft Windows; in fact, Windows isn't even listed in the top three. Instead, the most vulnerable OS was Apple Mac OS X, followed by Apple iOS and Linux kernel. As you can see in the list below, Mac OS X had 147 vulnerabilities, with 64 being rated as high-severity bugs. There were 127 in iOS, 32 of those rated as high. Linux kernel had a rough year, with 119 security vulnerabilities and 24 being rated as high-severity. The flip-side is that none of the security holes in Windows versions were rated as low severity.

How LoopPay Helps Samsung (SSNLF) Catch Up With Apple’s (AAPL) Apple Pay

Samsung recently acquired LoopPay, a startup that allows user to make payments with their phones

Published: Feb 22, 2015 at 8:39 am EST

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has had its own payment system, Google Wallet in the market for a few years now, and is soon launching a new payment system called Plaso. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced its payment systems, Apple Pay, to the world last year. SAMSUNG ELECT LTD (F) (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) has long been on the lookout to find something that could help it catch up with its rivals; recently, it acquired LoopPay, a mobile payments startup.

LoopPay is a venture that kicked off with a basic iPhone accessory that would help users pre-load their credit/debit cards onto the system by sweeping the card with a puck-sized device that goes into a headphone jack. After that, the user is given a phone case that is installed with a magnetic induction loop, which communicates with the terminal and registers the swiped card with it.

This case with the little puck then duplicates the effect of a card sweeping through a terminal and sends out a code to match what the credit card reader would have received to process the transaction. LoopPay states that these devices use Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST), which is safe and secure. Last winter, LoopPay also launched the Fob mobile payment solution that also can be used instead of the case to process transactions.

According to CNET, the service works at almost every place that has a card reader installed, although it takes a bit more time compared to ApplePay. While ApplePay uses Touch ID to authenticate user identity and instantly processes transactions, LoopPay requires that a user press a button on the back of the case or it can be activated when the case is paired via Bluetooth.

Will Amazon's New Echo Change Our Work Lives?

We’re all familiar with Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, two “smart assistant” products designed to make our lives easier. Now, Amazon released a product of their own called Echo which comes in the form of a voice activated cylindrical device. I recently purchased an Echo and had the opportunity to test it out. In my opinion the Echo is far superior to any smart assistant product available today. It does everything from play music and read the news to create to do lists and order products from Amazon. It’s actually a fascinating little device that has dramatic implications for creating “smart homes” and “smart offices.” In this episode of the Future in 5 I talk about the potential impact that the Amazon Echo can have on our personal and work lives.

Apple reportedly in talks to build $1.7B plant in partnership with Japan Display

Apple may soon secure a more stable source for small to medium sized device displays, as the company is said to be in talks with Japan Display on the buildout of a $1.7 billion manufacturing plant.

Japan Display — the result of a 2012 merger of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba's display divisions — is mulling an agreement with Apple that could see the Cupertino, Calif., company cover a substantial portion of costs on the buildout of a 200 billion yen (about $1.68 billion) LCD display manufacturing facility, reports Japan's Nikkan Kogyo. In return for its investment, Apple would receive most or all of the factory's output.

According to sources, the suggested plant is to be built in Ishikawa, Japan next year and will produce LTPS (low temperature polysilicon), a technology first used by Apple in the latest generation iPhone 6. If green lit, the sixth-generation facility will be capable of churning out large glass substrates at a high rate, and could potentially transition over to the production of OLED panels. Apple's first OLED product will be the Apple Watch, which is currently slated for release in April.

At this point talks are fluid, sources said, noting Apple is also negotiating a display deal with Foxconn. It was reported in November that Foxconn subsidiary Innolux Corp. is sinking $2.6 billion into a state-of-the-art plant to serve Apple's ballooning demand for iPhone panels.

"No formal decision has been made regarding any matter that we need to disclose," Japan Display said in a statement obtained by Reuters.

The report also notes that Apple sources iPhone displays from Japanese companies JDI and Sharp, as well as South Korea's LG Display.

Apple Leak Reveals iOS 9 Early Release

iOS 8 is a superb platform, but it has also been plagued by bugs. Arguably even more damaging for Apple , however, has been its ongoing struggle to fix them. So the company has had a simple but brilliant idea.
According to the ever reliable 9to5Mac, which cites “multiple people briefed on the plans”, Apple will perform a policy U-turn and begin releasing public betas of its latest iOS versions.
9to5Mac claims iOS 8.3 will be the first public beta in mid-March (iOS 8.2isn’t even out the door yet). This will tie in with iOS 8.3’s third beta release for developers which shows Apple sensibly isn’t pushing the very first beta straight to the public. It will also give cautious users more reassurance that new iOS versions are more widely tested before official launches.
Interested users will be able to get the software using Apple’s existingAppleSeed feedback program.
Far more exciting though is news Apple will also apply this policy to iOS 9. The company is expected to debut the next gen release at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June and follow up “with a public beta release during the summer, and final release in the fall.”

Apple Watch straps will be available to purchase separately at launch

Despite speculation to the contrary, Apple does in fact plan to sell an array of bands as separate accessories for the Apple Watch at launch, according to sources. So far Apple has only shown the Watch in pre-assembled collections, which reduces their potential for customization, but our sources say that Apple’s retail outlets will be stocked on day one with individual straps so customers can easily mix and match the looks of their Watches.
While Apple has hinted at millions of combinations of Apple Watch when considering the various watch faces and interchangeable strap combos, up until now we’ve not had confirmation that straps would be available to purchase separately alongside the Apple Watch at launch.

What we know about the Apple Watch lineup so far from Apple is that it will come in three models— Apple Watch, Sport, and Edition— with each of those models offering a selection of the total 6 straps Apple has shown so far on the 38mm size, 42mm size, or both. Some of the straps Apple shows on its website, such as the Modern Buckle and Leather Loop— will be limited to either the 38mm or 42mm models in select colors for the Apple Watch and gold Apple Watch Edition. It’s unclear Apple’s exact motivation in limiting certain watch straps to either the 38mm and 42mm options in the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition lineups. The Apple Watch Sport line offers all strap options and colors for both sizes, according to Apple’s site. However, it’s possible that some of the straps Apple shows as limited to either the 38mm or 42mm sizes will become available to purchase for the other size separately.

Apple: Fine, we admit it – MacBook Pros suffer wonky GPU crapness

Give it back and we'll fix it (for free, sigh)

Faced with a class-action lawsuit, Apple has agreed to fix MacBook Pros with knackered graphics electronics free of charge.
The iPhone giant said its expensive notebooks must be repaired to address faulty video hardware that causes frequent restarts, distorted graphics and blank screens. The crappy models are the 15in and 17in Macbook Pros manufactured in 2011, and in the 15in Macbook Pros with Retina made in 2012 and 2013.
Fans can take the laptops directly to Apple or to an authorized repair shop to have the work done. The repair service kicks off on February 20 in the US and Canada, and February 27 in other countries. Additionally, those who ponied up their own money for repairs on the covered models can obtain a refund from Apple.
The wonky video issues are at the center of an ongoing class-action lawsuit filed against Apple last year.
The complaint accuses the company of using a defective solder to connect the GPU chips in the notebooks, causing many units to fail. Apple says "a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems" are affected. The lawsuit, originally limited to California and Florida in the US, was expanded to include fanbois in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Vermont and Puerto Rico. ®

What an Apple Car Would Need to Compete With Tesla

Apple's nearly four decades as a company have been filled with repeated disruption of otherwise settled industries, leaving many to wonder if the world's most valuable company may be preparing to upend the auto industry with an Apple car.
"Apple is very good at disrupting things at a grand scale, from the music industry to music players and smartphones," Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy told ABC News. "And here you have a company with more money than anyone else. With that said, they can do anything they want to."
The iPhone maker reported in January its biggest quarter yet as it sold more than 74 million iPhones. Apple's $18 billion earnings were also the best quarter in terms of profit any public company has ever reported.

A lawsuit filed in Massachusetts federal court this week by A123 Systems alleges Apple poached five of the lithium-ion battery maker's employees, fueling more speculation the iPhone maker may be quietly working on an electric car.

Apple declined to comment on the lawsuit and reports it is building an automotive team.

With Tesla on the cutting edge of the electric car market, Moorhead said Apple will need to develop some strategic partnerships to bring a hypothetical Apple car to the market.

"They need to focus on what they're really good at and partner with companies and acquire companies who know how to do everything else," he said. "For instance, I don't see a core competency in braking systems that Apple would bring to the table or a new way to do tires."

Not only will Apple's worth give it a competitive edge, but the company also has the advantage of employing a brain trust of some of the best designers and user experience experts in the world, Moorhead said.
