05.Sony: Only Xperia Z series smartphones to get Android Lollipop

Sony HQ

Sony has confirmed that the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) update will be rolled out only for Xperia Z series smartphones.
Replying to a Sony Xperia M2 user on the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Sony tweeted that the Android Lollipop will be released only for the Xperia Z line up of devices. This means other Sony smartphones including the Xperia T2 Ultra, the Xperia M2 Aqua or the E series smartphones won’t get the latest update to Google’s mobile operating system.

“Hi. We can advise that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is going to be released for the entire Xperia Z series only, we do apologise.” Sony tweeted.
The tech giant also apologized for not updating its non-Xperia Z devices with the latest Android iteration.
However, there’s still a ray of hope for other Sony smart phone users as while responding to the same user, but on a different query, the tech giant has suggested that the update might also be rolled out to other Sony devices, but didn’t specify when or which devices exactly.
“We can’t comment on upgrades for further products at this time – please stay tuned to our blog for the latest information,” the tweet read.
The company has already started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop for its Xperia Z lineup including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact starting February.

Surfaced Android Lollipop Update: Samsung Galaxy S4

For the Samsung Galaxy S4 an update to Android Lollipop is apparently appeared on a Chinese site. But all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, will get the Android 5.0.1 update?

Apparently, the Samsung Galaxy S4 the Lollipop update leaked on Android 5.0.1.Thus, owners may soon get the new Android software. At least that seems Android Lollipop already to work on some smartphones Galaxy S4 series such as phonearena.com writes and as an example of the first screenshots.

These seem very genuine, at least Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface is clearly visible. The images are taken from a Chinese user forum , a user of the forum.xda-developers.com points in an entry. In the forum post, there is also a link that leads to the leaked software.
Some users have already downloaded the software and report that everything seems to be working fine on their Samsung Galaxy S4. So no error in terms of WiFi, 3G or 4G Dtaen, NFC, Bluetooth or sensors were found. Of course, it can be expected that certain system messages in Chinese display. If you really want to download this version, you have to live with this potential limitation. But get all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Android 5.0.1 update?

Samsung Galaxy S5 to get Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update in U.S. soon, 5.0.1 update leaked for S4

The Android 5.0 Lollipop OS for the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be coming to the U.S. soon, although the official release date of the update is still unknown.
More countries in Europe are now enjoying Android 5.0 in their Galaxy S5 handsets as it seems that Samsung is focusing on European countries when it comes to rolling out the update. The sweet taste of Lollipop has reached Poland, Spain, Russia, and the U.K. Samsung-centric tech blog SamMobile added that the tech giant will soon roll out the update to some other European nations such as the Czech Republic and Romania, and more users in Spain.
Surprisingly, some users in a few Asian countries like Hong Kong and Malaysia reportedly received the OS update, which hints that Asian countries are next in line. The fast rollout of the 5.0 update suggests that Galaxy S5 users in the far west will see it on their handsets soon.
It can be surmised that Samsung is very systematic in rolling out the latest Android update.

LG G3 Lollipop Update 'Coming Soon'

Kudos are in order for LG Electronics. Why? LG last month began doling out Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to G3 handset owners in Europe, and starting soon, the South Korean electronics company will extend the same courtesy to G3 owners in the U.S. That will put G3 owners in select company -- less than 0.1 percent of Android handsets have Android 5.0 installed.

Android 5.0 came out nearly three months ago (early November of last year), yet it doesn't warrant an entry on Google's Android Developers Dashboard, as is the case with any version of the open source operating system will less than 0.1 percent distribution. That will change as the year goes on, but for now, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.x-4.3) and KitKat (Android 4.4) are the two most popular major builds of Android at 46 percent and 39.1 percent, respectively, followed by earlier versions dating back to Froyo.

Don't panic! It's not that big a deal if you aren't yet running Android Lollipop

Sometimes it sucks being an Android user. You never have the same version of Android as your friends, and you’re often left out in the cold with a phone or tablet that’s one version of Android behind everyone else.

Just kidding—it doesn’t suck. The breath of hardware and software choices is one of the things that makes Android great. The good news is that Android is now at a point where 65 percent of its users are on a version of Android that’s no more than two years old, while 40 percent are enjoying Android KitKat. Those are great figures compared to the way that things were divvied up just a few months ago.

Android 5.0 Lollipop review: An ambitious start down Android's new path

Lollipop is Android’s biggest release in over three years, but it feels like this is just the beginning. It’s packed to the brim with new features and an improved user interface, and it’s also the debut of a new design philosophy for Android. But it still feels like there’s still so much more work to be done.

I won’t be covering the newly redesigned suite of Google apps, since most of them were updated before Lollipop went live to everyone, and they're independent from the operating system. And like my Android 4.4.4 KitKat review last year, I won’t give it a score because Android is always changing, and is frequently modified by device manufacturers.

10 Material Design Android apps you should be using right now

Last year, Google unveiled its design vision for the future. Called Material Design, it incorporates bold colors, flat elements, and informative animations to create a fresh user interface for the modern age. Material Design made its major debut with the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop in the fall, and Google has been rapidly updating its own apps and services to take advantage of the new design directives.
Google isn't the only one that's been applying Material Design ideas to its apps: plenty of third-party Android app makers have released refreshed and overhauled apps to match Google's new platform. These apps often look and feel great, and they're typically much more enjoyable to use than older Android apps thanks to their fun animations and delightful transitions.

Here are 10 Android apps that have taken advantage of Google's new tools to provide fresh takes on old ideas. (Note: if you don't yet have Android 5.0 Lollipop on your phone, you can still install and use these apps. The designs and appearances will be the same, but older phones won't support all of the animations and transitions possible with Lollipop.)

Android Lollipop is out, but almost no one is using it

Android 5.0 Lollipop has had its troubles. First, it stumbled out of the gate. It was briefly available over-the-air (OTA) for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (both first and second generation), and Nexus 10 in early November, but then Google pulled the upgrade for two weeks. Today, almost two months after the re-release on Google Nexus 5, 10, and Nexus 7 Wi-Fi devices, as well as Moto X and G phones, Lollipop still has only a handful of users, never mind a mass audience.

No, you're not mis-reading the graphic. Six weeks after Android 5.0.x Lollipop was released, almost no one is running it. Google
According to Google's latest Google Play Store results for early January 2015, less than 0.1 percent of all Android devices were using Lollipop. Ouch! By comparison, the last major Android release 4.4, KitKat, reached 1.1 percent of its audience in its first month out.
